Despite Zanzibar’s long history as an island of spices, the Queen of Spices, Bourbon vanilla, has only been cultivated for the past 20 years. Unlike on the large plantations of the important production centres, vanilla in Zanzibar is cultivated by small farmers, just like all 1001 Organic spices. Throughout the years of producing vanilla, farmers have realized that the best quality of vanilla is grown when the vanilla plant is cultivated in mixed cultures with other spices. This form of cultivation and the careful curing by the farmers themselves, achieve the fantastic Bourbon aroma in our vanilla pods. Due to this natural form of cultivation we can only offer our clients a limited supply of our valuable vanilla each year.
