Bakari Mataka is the chairman of the farmers’ cooperative “Daya Cooperative Society” which includes 17 members. Along with 1001 Organic, the cooperative cultivates spices on Pemba Island. Since his youth Bakari has been farming spices such as cinnamon and pepper. At a training course 20 years ago he learned how to grow and process vanilla. Since then he has successively improved the cultivation of vanilla and adapted it to the richness of the island’s environment. He also uses his considerable knowledge of this plant to provide many of his colleagues with vanilla seedlings and is regarded as the vanilla specialist among the 1001 Organic farmers for his very aromatic vanilla.
